Monday, May 12 – Departure from the US, Canada and the UK or pre-tour time in Europe.
Tuesday, May 13 – Arrival in Kiev. After arrival we will take a walking tour of the downtown area around Independence Square and then have our first Ukrainian meal. At the end of the day we will make our way to Zhitomir, about a two and a half hour ride, and get settled in at Ukraine Hotel, where you will stay for the entire trip, except the last day.
Wednesday, May 14 -- All-day visit to the State Archives to research your family’s heritage.
Thursday, May 15 -- Today we will visit the village of Emilchin and surrounding area.
Friday, May 16 – Today we will visit the villages of Dovbysh, Lubarska, Marijewka and Futter.
Saturday, May 17 -- Today we will visit Ostrowka and Gnadenthal.
Sunday, May 18 – Today we will visit the villages of Neudorf and Solodyri and attend the worship service in the historic German Baptist Church, pastored by Eugen Mohr. We will also visit the village of Heimtal; it used to be the parish centre for the Lutheran Church .
Monday, May 19 – Today we will visit the villages of Karlswalde and Gruental.
Tuesday, May 20 – Today we will visit the villages of Marlinowka, Aleksandrja, Puchowo, and Zelanka.
Wednesday, May 21 – Today we will visit the villages of Koraz, Sadki and Sijance; also Granidub.
Thursday, May 22 – – This morning we will visit the village of Horstschick and the museum in Koreston. If some of you need/want additional time to work in the archives, this might be a good time to do it. Keep in mind that there is also the former KGB archive. We will return in time for the Bolshevik Tour of the city of Zhitomir and visit some historic sites in the nearby countryside. After supper we will view the film, Everything is Illuminated, about a young Jewish American who goes back to Volhynia to visit his grandfather’s hometown.
Friday, May 23 – Today is open for a return visit to any villages of your choice, the archives, shopping, sightseeing, an orphanage, the space museum and/or a visit to the Samaritan alcohol and drug recovery center. http://www.gsmukraine.com
Saturday, May 24 – Today is open for a return visit to any villages or for free time.
Sunday, May 25 – Today we will tour the historic city of Kiev for a day of sightseeing. Among the many interesting sites, we will visit the hill on which the city was founded ca 400 AD, Lavra (an ancient Orthodox monastery founded 1051 AD), the Chernobyl Museum, Independence Square (place of the Orange Revolution) Babi Yar (slaughter of 70,000 Jews by the Nazis in September, 1941), Great Patriotic War Museum, Andrei’s Descent (great street shopping) and a number of other interesting sites. If we have time we may take a cruise down the Dneiper River. The day will end with a farewell dinner. We will overnight at the Hotel Lybid, within walking distance of downtown Kiev. It’s a nice hotel with air conditioning, satellite TV and Internet services.
Monday, May 26 – We depart for our tour of Germany, as others leave for home or other destinations.
